Micheluzzi takes 1

Micheluzzi takes 1

SINGAPORE — David Micheluzzi kept his cool to take a one-shot lead heading into the final round of the Singapore Classic.

The Australian finished his 6-under 66 with back-to-back birdies in the third round of the European tour event on Saturday. He’s 13-under par for the tournament.

Overnight co-leader Andy Sullivan (69) and fellow Englishman Sam Bairstow (68) both trail by one stroke at Laguna National Golf Resort Club.

The 27-year-old Micheluzzi, ranked No. 347, is looking for his first win on the European tour. He had one bogey — on the second hole — and acknowledged being “a little bit flustered” by the heat.

“Today was very hot, you could see me with a towel over my head for basically for the whole day,” Micheluzzi said. “At literally every water station, we just put it straight in and just kept myself cool.

“The first probably eight holes I didn’t play so great and then the last probably ten I really got dialed in and holed some putts, which was nice.”

Shubhankar Sharma (68) of India bogeyed the 18th to finish two shots off the lead on 11-under overall.

Sullivan described his round as a “rollercoaster of emotions.” The 36-year-old Englishman made four birdies in his first eight holes before back-to-back double bogeys. He then dropped another shot on the 11th before making four more birdies in the last seven holes.

“Recently when it has been going wrong I’ve tended to let it get to me a little bit, so I’m proud of myself today for coming back in and putting up a fight,” he said. “I feel like my game is getting back and my confidence has grown with it.”

The last of Sullivan’s four European tour titles came in 2020 at the English Championship.

Shane Lowry’s 66 left the former British Open champion five shots off the lead.
