Live blog from Albertsons Stadium: Wyoming holds 14

BOISE - The Boise State football team holds a 10-7 lead over Wyoming in the third quarter at Albertsons Stadium.

Boise State trailed 7-3 at the half, but opened the third quarter with an 18-play, 71-yard drive that took 9:44 off the clock. Montell Cozart scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to put the Broncos in front 10-7.

But Allen responded with a drive that showed just why some NFL scouts and draft pundits think he could be the No. 1 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to put Wyoming right back in front.

Allen had rushes of 14 and 15 yards to move the chains and found Austin Fort with an impressive throw back across his body while running to the right for a 20-yard touchdown pass. The 10-play, 75-yard drive gave Wyoming a 14-10 lead.

The Broncos had just 118 yards of offense in the first half and went 1 for 6 on third down. The Broncos twice stalled in the red zone in the first half, and only came away with three points.

Boise State entered ranked No. 113 in total offense with 336.0 yards per game. Only once in the previous nine years have the Broncos finished worst than 21st, and that came in 2012 when they were 68th.

The Broncos have averaged at least 472 yards of offense in each of the past four seasons, but are on pace to finish nearly 130 yards per game below that.

Brett Rypien was just 2 of 5 for 15 yards in the first half. Boise State completed just four passes as a team and had 29 yards passing.

Alexander Mattison has 60 yards rushing on 11 carries, while Montell Cozart has four rushes for 23 yards.

Wyoming took an early 7-0 lead on a 1-yard run from quarterback Josh Allen. The Cowboys took the opening kick off and went 68 yards in 13 plays, converting a 4th and 1 along the way, to strike first.

The Broncos started at the 40-yard line following a nice return from Cedrick Wilson on the kick off and drove inside the 10 yard line, but Brett Rypien was sacked on third down and Boise State was forced to try a field goal.

Haden Hoggarth, who was a perfect 6 for 6 this season, missed a short 29-yard field goal wide to the right.

DeAndre Pierce then intercepted Allen at the Boise State 11-yard line and returned it across midfield, but another Boise State drive stalled and Hoggarth was forced to attempt another field goal. This one, from 23 yards, was good.

Neither team could move the ball the rest of the half, and the clock ran out at 7-3.

Boise State will get the ball to start the third quarter.

A steady rain has been falling since around 4 p.m. and is expected to remain for much for he night. The wind doesn’t seem to be a factor, at least at this point.

A near sellout crowd was expected tonight prior to the rain. We’ll see if the subpar weather impacts the actual attendance or not.

Boise State and Wyoming have identical 4-2 overall and 2-0 Mountain West records. The winner will keep pace with Colorado State as the only undefeated teams in the Mountain Division, while the loser will fall a game back.

The only announced inactive for Boise State is tight end Chase Blakley, who also missed last week’s game at San Diego State.

The game was tied late in the fourth quarter when Boise State quarterback was sacked and fumbled the ball out of the end zone for a game-winning safety in a 30-28 loss to the Cowboys.

Boise State gets another shot at Wyoming Saturday night when the two teams meet at Albertsons Stadium in Boise. Kick off is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. and the game will be televised by ESPN2.

Both teams have identical records at 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Mountain West play, which makes the matchup a big one in the race for the Mountain Division title.

1Boise State’s two-game winning streak has been fueled by a strong running game. Alexander Mattison had at least 100 yards in the wins over BYU and San Diego State after rushing for 21 yards in the previous two games. Boise State is 24-3 under coach Bryan Harsin when they have a 100-yard rusher. Boise State needs to keep feeding Mattison the ball.

Mattison’s impressive last two games have left most wondering where this was earlier in the season. Mattison rushed for just 166 yards in the first four gmes, but has 246 yards in the past two. He was expected to be the No. 1 back to start the season, but finally appears ready to take the job. A strong running game is key for Boise State’s offense.

88 • Jake Roh • Tight end

Roh had a team-high six catches against the Aztecs last week and is second on the team with 20 catches through six games. He had 10 catches all of last season while battling a knee injury. Roh leads the Broncos with six total touchdowns this season and continues to be a valuable asset in the red zone. Roh’s senior year is shaping up to be a good one.

8 • Jabril Frazier • STUD

Frazier had two sacks last week at San Diego State and continues to be more involved in Boise State’s defense. Frazier battled multiple injuries last season and wasn’t close to 100 percent. He’s taking advantage of Boise State’s rotation at the STUD position to stay healthy and fresh. NFL teams love his size - and are starting to like his production.

Allen has struggled a little bit due to the loss of several key weapons from last season, but NFL scouts love his size and athleticism. He’s projected by some to be the top pick in next year’s NFL Draft. He’s got a strong arm, and can use his legs to escape pressure.

25 • Austin Conway • Wide receiver

The former Wyoming basketball player has made the move to football look like a smart one. Conway played some last year, but has taken over as the No. 1 receiver this season. He leads Wyoming with 31 catches for 252 yards and has two touchdowns. He’s also dangerous as the Cowboys’ punt returner.

28 • Andrew Wingard • Safety

The preseason Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year is off to an impressive start. He’s second on the Cowboys with 57 tackles and has 4.5 tackles-for-loss, a sack, two interceptions, two pass break-ups and a fumble recovery. He’s an all-league type player.

2 — Avery Williams has two punt return touchdowns for Boise State. He’s one of five players in the country with multiple punt return touchdowns.

6 — Bronco tight end Jake Roh has six touchdowns through six games. He had just 10 catches all of last season.

11 — Boise State’s defense has 11 takeaways. They had just nine in 2016, which was a record-low for the program.

18 — Boise State has had 18 players make their first career starts this season. That total is the ninth-most in the country.

63 — Bronco linebacker Leighton Vander Esch has 63 tackles on the year. His 10.5 tackles per game average ranks ninth in the country.
